Halar ECTFE · Orange, TX

Halar® ECTFE, read in the process.

Orange makes Halar® ECTFE, the copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene, as pellets for melt processing and powders for coatings. Inline means the probe sits in the process line or vessel itself. Spectrally X1 INLINE takes a Raman spectrum there about every 5 seconds and turns it into process values for your control system.

What a Raman spectrum of ECTFE carries.
  1. Identity and fillersPellets and powders checked against their reference spectrum before packaging, at-line.
  2. Copolymer balanceEthylene and CTFE units carry different bonds, so their ratio shows in one spectrum: a check on the chemistry behind each grade.
  3. Unreacted monomerThe C=C bands of ethylene and CTFE; the 300–3500 cm⁻¹ configuration covers both.
  4. Process streamsThe composition of liquids around the polymerization, where pressure, temperature and location fit the probe.
A lab result on a pulled sample arrives after the sample is prepared and run. The analyzer returns a reading about every 5 seconds, and your lab methods stay as the reference.

02Where it fits

Three places in a fluoropolymer process where a reading can change a decision.

Pressure, temperature and location of each point are checked against the probe rating in the feasibility workshop.

03The lab loop

Production keeps running while the sample is in the lab.

A pulled sample describes the process at the moment it was drawn. By the time the result is back, more material has been made on the same settings.

Pulled sample
1result per draw

Draw a sample, prepare it, run it, report. The result describes the moment of the draw, and the lab queue sets how often that happens.

Spectrally X1 INLINE
~5s per reading

The probe reads where it is placed and sends the values to your control system. With a reading every few seconds, a drift shows while the settings can still change.

Per reading
~5s

From spectrum to a process value. Acquisition time is configurable from 5 to 300 s.

Reagents
0

Routine operation runs without reagents or consumables. Rated laser lifetime is a minimum of two years.

Channels
2

Two measurement points per cabinet as standard, for example the finished grade and a process stream.

To the line
5.5mo

Typical time from the first workshop to a running installation: 3 to 5.5 months.

04Who this is for

Four desks at Orange use the same number.

Each page of this site answers the question one of them asks first.

Production

Hold the chemistry on a number the whole unit sees.

With composition values in the control system, a drift in the copolymer balance shows as a trend on the screen and is corrected during the run.

  • Chemistry checks between lab draws
  • More checks from the same lab hours
  • A time-stamped record per lot
Use cases →
Shift operations

The same curve at every handover.

Each shift sees the same composition trend, so handover is a look at the curve and the alarm log.

  • Alarm limits set in Spectrally OS
  • PASS/FAIL flags on the DCS screen
  • Start-up training for up to 10 operators

Technical services

The record behind a lot, next to your melt-flow result.

A composition record stored with every lot gives technical services the chemistry data behind a grade when a customer asks for the record behind a lot.

  • Spectra and values stored per lot
  • CSV, PDF or raw-spectrum export
  • Models built on your grades, checked against your lab
What we measure →
Occupational safety

Fewer manual draws from process streams.

Each routine sample from a process stream is a handling step. A probe in the line takes part of that routine off the operator's round, and the lab samples on its own schedule.

  • Fewer manual sample draws
  • Probe retracted and rinsed automatically
  • Readings and alarms logged with time stamps
