Torlon® PAI, from resin to compound.

Base resins and molding compounds are made at Greenville. This page follows where the chemistry of each is set and what a Raman spectrum reads along the way.

01The grades

Base resins and compounds made at Greenville.

Base resin
polyamide-imide

The polymer every Torlon® compound is built on.

Molding compounds
4203L · 4301 · 5030 · 7130

Unfilled, wear, glass-fiber and carbon-fiber grades, molded and then post-cured to full properties.

Mechanical and thermal properties of the molded part stay with your lab: they depend on molding and post-cure. The spectrum carries the chemistry upstream: reaction progress, solvent content in the liquids and the fingerprint of the powder.

02Where the chemistry is set

The chain is set in the reaction, the rest follows from it.

1

Reaction

Monomer charge and reaction time build the chain, and the end of the reaction decides how the batch behaves in the steps after it.

2

After the reaction

Solvent left in the polymer and the identity of each powder lot decide what goes on to compounding.

03Why Raman reads this chemistry

Polymer and solvent each leave their own signature.

≈

Backbone and reacting groups

The aromatic backbone and the reacting groups carry their own Raman bands. The study selects bands that stay clear of the solvent, using the 300–3500 cm⁻¹ configuration.

○

Solvent in a liquid stream

Organic solvents are strong Raman scatterers, so their content in a liquid stream reads directly; the study correlates it with residual solvent in the dried powder.

One model per value

Spectrally OS runs one calibrated model per parameter, a hybrid of neural networks and classical chemometrics trained on your process and checked against your lab.

04Common practice and with the probe

The same decisions, taken on a reading from the process.

Common practice
With the probe
Reaction progress judged on a pulled sample
✓Reaction progress read through the batch
Solvent content checked on a sample
✓Solvent content read in the liquid stream
Powder identity confirmed by lab tests
✓A powder fingerprint checked at-line
A batch record built from lab results
✓A composition record written while the batch runs
