Halar® ECTFE, form by form.

One copolymer, two product forms and a range of melt viscosities. This page follows what each form is sold on and what a Raman spectrum reads in the chemistry behind it.

01The grades

Each form of Halar® starts from the same copolymer.

Pellets · melt-processable
300 · 500 LC · 901

Low to high melt viscosity for wire and cable, tubing, film and extruded liners. Halar® 558 is a foamable grade for insulation.

Powders · coatings
6014 · 7518

Clear topcoats over the 6514, 6614 and 6914 primers for electrostatic and fluidized-bed coating; 7518 is a filled black powder for ducts.

Powder · compounding
5001C

A powder grade supplied for compounding.

The copolymer
E-CTFE

Ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene in one chain, made at Orange without fluorosurfactants.

Melt viscosity sets most of the difference between melt grades, and melt-flow testing stays in your lab. The spectrum carries the chemistry: identity and fillers of the finished grade, copolymer balance and unreacted monomer.

02Where the grade is set

Chemistry in polymerization, form in finishing.

1

Polymerization

The monomer balance sets the copolymer composition, and chain length sets the melt viscosity each grade is sold on.

2

Finishing

Pellets for melt processing or powder for coating fix the form the customer receives.

03Why Raman reads this chemistry

Each monomer unit brings its own bonds.

≈

C–H next to C–F and C–Cl

Ethylene and CTFE units carry different bonds, each with its own Raman bands. Their ratio in one spectrum is a direct handle on composition.

○

C=C of the monomers

The C=C bands of ethylene and CTFE mark unreacted monomer; the 300–3500 cm⁻¹ configuration covers both.

One model per value

Spectrally OS runs one calibrated model per parameter, a hybrid of neural networks and classical chemometrics trained on your grades and checked against your lab.

04Common practice and with the probe

The same decisions, taken on a reading from the process.

Common practice
With the probe
Grade identity confirmed by lab tests on the lot
✓Identity and fillers checked at-line before packaging
Composition checked on a pulled sample
✓Copolymer balance as a trend between lab draws
A lot record built from lab results after production
✓A composition record written while the lot is made
Melt-flow testing on the finished lot
✓Melt flow stays in the lab, with the composition record beside it
