Verification of the F/U ratio and formaldehyde concentration in UFC concentrate upon receipt

The molar F/U ratio in UF resin is a fundamental parameter determining formaldehyde emissions from the finished board, and it directly results from the composition of the received UFC concentrate. We demonstrate how to verify the F/U ratio and formaldehyde content in UFC upon delivery – within 1–2 minutes and without reagents.

Client context

UFC is a concentrated, pre-condensed solution of urea and formaldehyde, supplied to amino resin producers. The total content of formaldehyde and urea is approx. 85% – hence the trade name UFC-85. Typical composition is approx. 60% formaldehyde and approx. 25% urea, with the remainder being water. The receiver dilutes the concentrate and adjusts urea dosages to their target F/U ratio.

Formaldehyde and urea do not occur in UFC in free form. In aqueous solution, formaldehyde is almost entirely bound, and a portion of the urea is pre-reacted. The F/U ratio is therefore a stoichiometric quantity, summed across all bound and free forms. This distinguishes the task from a simple determination of two substances in a mixture.

Challenge.

  • The F/U ratio of the resin is the primary parameter controlling formaldehyde emission from the finished board and determines the achieved emission class (E1, E0.5, CARB2 / TSCA Title VI). Producers operate close to the limit, so an uncontrolled error in raw material composition directly translates into the emission class.
  • Even variability within the supplier's specification translates into the F/U ratio in the reactor. For a typical commercial UFC-85 specification (formaldehyde 59.5–60.5%, urea 24.5–25.5%), the molar F/U ratio falls within the range of approx. 4.67–4.94 around the nominal value of approx. 4.8 – a spread of about 6% that must be compensated in the dosage.
  • The sulfite method determines formaldehyde only. To obtain the F/U ratio, a second determination is required – urea content, in practice via total nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method. Refractometry and densitometry provide only the total dissolved solids content and do not separate the two components.
  • Both time and exposure matter. Formaldehyde has a harmonized classification of Carc. 1B and Muta. 2, and work with it is subject to Directive 2004/37/EC with a binding limit value of 0.37 mg/m³. Every manual sample collection and every wet determination is an exposure event and a source of post-reaction waste.
  • Verification of the delivered product is a quality system requirement. Without a rapid method, it effectively reduces to accepting the supplier's CoA without independent confirmation – and a composition error is only revealed in the finished resin.

Solution

The result is available before the batch is directed to a tank or reactor, allowing confirmation of delivery compliance and correction of dosages for the specific batch.

The measurement is performed using Raman spectroscopy. Water is a weak scatterer in this technique, so it does not drown out the analyte signal in aqueous solution – this is a general physical property of the method, independent of the formulation.
