Inline measurement of formaldehyde (HCHO) concentration in formalin production

Inline HCHO concentration measurement instead of sulfite titration

Client context

Formalin (37–50% HCHO in water with a methanol stabilizer) is a key raw material for the entire amino and phenolic resin industry. It is produced by catalytic oxidation of methanol, and its quality directly translates into the quality of resins at the customer's site.

Formaldehyde producers currently lack a fast inline measurement of HCHO concentration in the final product. An off-spec batch (incorrect paraformaldehyde level, excess formic acid) reaches the customer and ruins their resin, while formaldehyde as a CMR Cat. 1B substance requires a CoA with every delivery.

Challenge.

  • Sulfite titration (ISO 9020 / ASTM E1179) takes 30–45 minutes and requires manual sample collection.
  • The lack of rapid composition verification delays decisions during formalin filling and storage.
  • Formaldehyde is a CMR Cat. 1B substance – a CoA per delivery is mandatory for every customer.
  • NIR is sometimes used, but it provides a weaker signal at low paraformaldehyde concentrations.

Solution

Spectrally™ X1 measures HCHO concentration, as well as methanol and paraformaldehyde, directly in the production line, at the filling line, or in the warehouse. The measurement takes seconds, with no sample collection and no reagents.

For formalin customers, the same measurement means composition verification at every receipt in 1–2 minutes instead of 30–45 minutes of titration. Raman is a natural fit here, as water gives a weak signal and does not mask the analytes.
