Client context
Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins are the dominant binder for MDF and particleboard, accounting for over 80% of the wood resin market. They are formed in a water-based reactor from urea and formaldehyde, and their quality is determined by the formaldehyde/urea (F/U) ratio and the level of free formaldehyde at the end of the reaction.
The problem is that the F/U ratio changes during polycondensation and varies between batches, while laboratory results arrive after 30–45 minutes, by which time the reaction has long since progressed further. An off-spec batch means downtime or disposal of the batch.
Challenge.
- The F/U ratio and free formaldehyde change during the reaction; a lab technician manually takes a sample every dozen or so minutes, and sulfite titration (EN 120) takes 30–45 minutes.
- The decision to stop the reaction is made after the fact, risking an off-spec batch or gelation of the batch.
- Manual sampling from a hot reactor exposes workers to formaldehyde vapors (CMR Cat. 1B).
- Export and certification require documentation of composition and emission per batch (CARB ATCM 93120, EN 717-1, emission classes E0/E1).
Solution
We applied the Spectrally™ X1 INLINE analyzer with the X1 PROBE immersion probe. The probe measures the F/U ratio and free formaldehyde directly in the reactor, in real time (every dozen or so seconds) and without sample extraction. The model is tuned to the specific process and shows the operator the moment the polycondensation endpoint is reached.
Operation in a dense, fouling medium is possible thanks to the self-cleaning, retractable probe module (Retractex). The module operates cyclically: the probe retracts from the medium, the optical window is flushed, and then it returns to the measuring position. The lens does not become coated with deposits, and the analyzer operates continuously without manual cleaning during the campaign.
The same probe can track resin viscosity as an indirect indicator of reaction progress. In a feasibility study on UF and MUF resins, we confirmed inline viscosity measurement within the operating range (partial result), which completes reaction control without stopping the reactor.
Results
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| F/U ratio and free formaldehyde | real-time inline measurement, without manual sampling |
| Viscosity (polycondensation progress) | confirmed inline in a feasibility study (operating range, partial result) |
| Reference method (offline) | sulfite titration of free formaldehyde (EN 120): 30–45 min; rotational viscosity offline |
| Export driver | CARB ATCM 93120 and EN 717-1 require documentation of composition and emission per batch |
Viscosity was confirmed in a feasibility study (partial result). For the F/U ratio and free formaldehyde, we do not provide numerical results at this stage.
What this means for your process
If you produce UF or MUF resins for wood-based panels, controlling the F/U ratio and free formaldehyde directly in the reactor allows you to hit the reaction endpoint, reduce the number of off-spec batches, and document composition and emission to meet customer and regulatory requirements (CARB, EN 717-1).
The most reliable way to verify on a specific formulation is a short feasibility study on real samples.
