In the production of phenolic-formaldehyde resins, formaldehyde is, alongside phenol, the second critical analyte of the reaction. Its unreacted portion remains in the product and is later released as emissions, which is why the level of free formaldehyde is subject to standards for wood-based panels and products.
Formaldehyde is classified as a carcinogenic and mutagenic substance (CMR Cat. 1B), making its control a hard safety and compliance requirement, not merely a quality parameter. The same implementation that covered free phenol measurement controls formaldehyde without any additional installation.
Challenge.
- Free formaldehyde was determined by titration (ISO 9020), requiring 30–45 minutes and manual sampling from the reactor, exposing the laboratory technician to contact with a CMR substance.
- Results were delivered with a delay, so deviations were only identified after the batch had been completed.
- The dense, fouling reactor medium made measurement with classic probes impossible.
- Formaldehyde emission standards for panels and laminates require documented proof of its level.
Solution
We utilized the same system as for phenol: the Spectrally™ X1 INLINE with the X1 PROBE and a self-cleaning, retractable module (Retractex) that periodically retracts the probe, flushes the optical window, and returns to measurement, maintaining lens cleanliness in the challenging medium.
Formaldehyde is measured directly in the reactor, in parallel with phenol and the formaldehyde/phenol ratio. One measurement point thus covers both regulated analytes, without sampling and without interrupting the reaction.

Values originate from a single implementation in the resins segment, which covered phenol and formaldehyde. They should not be double-counted or transferred to other processes.

In-reactor measurement allows for more confident reaction control, reduced end-product emissions, and continuous compliance documentation, while additionally covering a second analyte (phenol) without extra equipment.
