Specialty Polymers, plant by plant.

Seven US plants make the portfolio managed from Alpharetta. This page lists what each makes, the process behind it and what a Raman spectrum carries at that step.

01The plants

Seven chemistries, one measurement layer.

PlantProductsProcessIn the spectrum
Augusta, GAKetaSpire® PEEK · Amodel® PPA · DCDPSresin production and compoundingwash and solvent streams; lot and compound fingerprint
Marietta, OHUdel® PSU · Radel® PPSUpolycondensation in solventreaction progress in solution; solvent streams
West Deptford, NJHylar® PVDF · Tecnoflon® FKMfluoropolymer polymerization without fluorosurfactantslatex and downstream streams; composition
Orange, TXHalar® ECTFEcopolymerization of ethylene and CTFEgrade identity; copolymer balance
Greenville, SCTorlon® PAIbase resin and compoundingreaction progress; powder fingerprint
Borger, TXRyton® PPSpolycondensationsolvent streams; lot fingerprint
Newark, DEAjedium™ filmsfilm extrusionresin feed fingerprint, at-line
The right-hand column lists candidate values where conditions fit the probe rating (16 bar, −40 to +125 °C). High-temperature and high-pressure steps are read on a cooled sample loop or at-line, as the feasibility study sets. A study on each plant's samples puts the accuracy and the validity range on the values.
02Where the process is changing

Three places where a continuous record helps most.

New recipes and new capacity are where a process window is learned. A composition record from the first batch shortens that learning.

NFS

Polymerization without fluorosurfactants

Syensqo runs its US fluoropolymer production without fluorosurfactants. New recipes are where composition data from the first batch counts.

+25%

Sulfone capacity at Marietta

Udel® PSU capacity grew by more than 25% in 2024. Added capacity is the natural moment to add a measurement point.

2025

Ryton® compounding at Augusta

Ryton® PPS compounding joined Amodel® and KetaSpire® compounding at Augusta in 2025. A new compound line is where an at-line fingerprint check is simplest to add.

03Why Raman reads these chemistries

Every polymer brings its own bonds.

≈

Bond-specific bands

C–F, C–Cl, aromatic rings, C=O and C=C each have their own Raman bands, so composition and conversion show in one spectrum.

○

Water stays quiet

Water is a weak Raman scatterer, so aqueous phases, wash liquors and latex stay readable where infrared methods contend with water absorption.

∑

One model per value

Spectrally OS runs one calibrated model per parameter, a hybrid of neural networks and classical chemometrics trained on each plant's samples.

04Common practice and with the probe

The same decisions, taken on a reading from the process.

Common practice
With the probe in the process
Residual monomer from a pulled sample, GC typically 30 to 60 minutes
✓Reaction progress read where conditions fit the probe
Molecular weight by GPC/SEC, typically 60 to 120 minutes
✓GPC/SEC keeps chain length; composition moves to the line
Solvent streams checked on samples
✓Solvent composition read in the line
Plant-to-plant comparison from lab reports
✓One record format from every plant
